School Start Time Committee Recommendation

School Start Time Logo
The School Start Time Committee has come to a point where it needs community input before a final presentation to the Board on April 17th.  The committee, comprised of 29 community members representing a variety of stakeholder groups has come to a consensus on the key points needed to move forward.

  • The scientific evidence is compelling
  • The results already achieved by school districts with later start times back up the science
  • Later school start times will result in health and wellness benefits for our students
  • We can adjust start times at an acceptable cost
  • The proposed new start times minimize disruption to stakeholders

After several months of research, analysis, discussion and compromise the School Start Time Committee proposes to:

    • Start and end High School and Middle School 25 minutes later
    • Start and end Elementary Schools 15 minutes later

The recommendation requires all stakeholders to adapt to the new start and end times.  Some adaptations are minor others more significant.  The Committee has tried to identify and address all the necessary stakeholder adaptations and is prepared to present and discuss plan details with all stakeholders.

The committee will be presenting the recommendation, rationale and implications at a series of forums throughout the month of March.

    It's Your Turn
    • Come to one of the presentations
    • Visit the School Start Time Committee website, there you will find all of the meeting minutes and resources used to make this recommendation.
    • Fill out the Community Input Survey and let the Committee know your thoughts (the survey will remain open until the end of March).

    Good evening,

They say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. With the storm that is headed our way — it is clear that the March lion is not done yet!  As such — all UCFSD schools and offices will be closed tomorrowMarch 14

With the tremendous performance of The Lion King Jr. put on by our Patton MS students still fresh on my mind - I hope that Stella has less staying power than Simba!  However, this storm may hang around longer than we would like.

We will have crews in all day tomorrow clearing our campuses and buses in order to open on time on Wednesday. But with anticipated cold temperatures and heavy winds tomorrow - we will evaluate conditions for Wednesday's school start. Any decision on school status for Wednesday will be made at approximately 8:00 pm tomorrow

Finally, enjoy the day tomorrow — including sledding and shoveling. Reading a good book while sitting next to a roaring fire is not a bad option either! While having all this fun remember — the last day of school will now be June 13!

    Regards,
    John Sanville

    Greetings-

All UCFSD schools and offices will be on a two-hour delay tomorrow – Wednesday, March 15. While Caesar should beware the Ides of March – UCF should beware the black ice, narrowed roads, snow covered sidewalks and frigid conditions we will have tomorrow.

Stella has made her point! The extra time will allow time and light to ease conditions. Please take all precautions necessary so that your travels are safe.

    Regards,
    John Sanville

    Good morning,

We have been in touch with PennDOT and local law enforcement - Route 1 is expected to be closed for several hours. With both Route 1 and the 926 bridge out -- our community is effectively cut in half. Under these circumstances bus runs could take hours. We feel it prudent to close schools today. Our offices will open on a 2-hour delay schedule.

I apologize for the timing and the inconvenience - a very difficult situation.

    Regards,
    John Sanville

To Benefit Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy
In Honor of Elliott and Henry Johnson
For those who don’t know me, I am Joanna Johnson, a Spanish teacher at Unionville High School.  My two sons, Elliott (13) and Henry (10), were diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in 2007. Duchenne is a catastrophic muscle wasting disease that affects all the muscles of the body, including the heart and lungs.  Most boys with Duchenne lose the ability to walk by their teens.  This is followed by severe lung and heart complications.  Survival beyond age thirty is rare.  There is no cure.  Despite this catastrophic diagnosis, there is something that Duchenne can never take away from us and that is hope.  With the help of this amazing community hope is alive and well and we know a future without Duchenne is possible. We are proud to say that over the last seven years of Unionville RunforourSons, we have raised over $360,000 for Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy to support Duchenne research.  This is no small accomplishment and we are so very grateful.

For years, I have longed to share good news about the progress being made with Duchenne research and finally I can.  On September 19, 2016, the Federal Drug Administration approved the first drug ever to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy, eteplirsen, now known as Exondys51.  This was a historic moment for the community and something we all worked hard for and wanted desperately.  This is something we can all celebrate because it is a concrete example of how a community coming together has the power to make a change.  Every dollar donated, every mile run, every person that became educated or educated someone else about this rare disease- MADE AN IMPACT AND MADE A DIFFERENCE!
Unfortunately, the drug will not be a viable option for Elliott and Henry based on their genetic mutation. But the hope is that the Exondys51 approval will move approvals for other Duchenne treatments in a positive direction.  In fact, Elliott and Henry have been involved in a clinical trial for a drug called Translarna to treat their particular genetic mutation.  It is currently in the review process with the FDA.

We need to continue the momentum to ensure that treatments are made available to all those that have Duchenne.  Once that milestone is reached, we will continue our work until a cure is found and we can say we have ended Duchenne once and for all.

We hope that you will join us in our fight on April 22nd.  Come to run or walk or bring the kids to enjoy the various activities available.  My family and I and all those affected by Duchenne thank you for your support.

    Warm regards,
    Joanna Johnson

On Saturday, March 11, the Pennsylvania Music Educator's Association held its annual Eastern Region Orchestra Festival at West Chester East High School. Students in this ensemble previously made District Orchestra, and on the strength of their reaudition were invited to perform at the Regional level. Three Unionville-Chadds Ford musicians were members of this select group: Casey Jennings on french horn, Michael Dirnberger on clarinet, and Adam Kimmel on viola. The culminating concert featured music normally heard at the Academy of Music. Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 is a looming giant in the orchestral repertoire, known for its level of difficulty, not only in performance, but also in emotional complexity. This year's Regional Orchestra rose to the challenge and left the audience with an unforgettable experience.

The Unionville-Chadds Ford community is very proud to count these three fine artists as their own! Please join us in congratulating Casey, Michael and Adam on their tremendous accomplishment.
