Unionville High School Indoor Color Guard:
First Place Champions of Tournament Indoor Association Southeastern Pennsylvania Region

Unionville High School’s Indoor Color Guard was crowned first place champions in Tournament Indoor Association’s Southeastern Pennsylvania Region. They achieved a season-high score of 91.54 in the Scholastic A Division.  This was Unionville’s first year competing in this upper level performance classification.  Earlier in the season, Unionville also made their first trip to the Winter Guard International World Championships in Dayton, Ohio and competed against 129 groups from around the country to advance to the semi-finals in the Scholastic A Division.

Unionville’s 13 member ensemble performed their award-winning show “The Lair” with artistry and precision.  The expressive production was set to the music of the string quartet Bond and was based on the ballet “Dracula.” It depicted the desires of Dracula’s Sirens to be the next chosen. Through the use of period costuming and the exploration of a broad range of choreographic styles, the performers took the audience on a visual roller coaster ride that culminated in the selection of the next bride and mistress of “The Lair.”

Congratulations to the regional champions on a superb season! We look forward to seeing next year’s amazing show.

Karalyn Joseph is Selected as the Longwood Rotary Club's Student of the Quarter

Beth Lynch, a counselor at  Unionville High School, said Karalyn Joseph was an easy selection for the counselors to make. Karalyn has the usual excellent grades and is very active in and initiates community projects. For example, Karalyn created the idea for and directed a play for special needs students.

Karalyn admits she spends a lot of time in musical theater and singing. These activities came naturally as part of helping her parents operate the Sandy Hill Camp in Maryland along with her brother and sister. Karalyn studied dance for 15 years, which also taught her how to act. She has been on stage for about 12 years now. The high quality results could be seen when she played Mary Poppins in the school play recently.

Karalyn participates in all but one of the choirs at Unionville High School. The choirs have won district, state and national championships. The District choir was invited to sing at Disney World, which was a great fun trip. Karalyn started three of the acappella singing groups at school.

Karalyn took a service trip to Thailand with her church several weeks ago. On this trip she had the opportunity to direct a show.

Karalyn plans to make music and theater the focus of her future. First she will study music theater at Harvard and then wants to eventually use music for therapy.

2017 Extended School Year (ESY) Student Volunteers Needed

SPED LOGO

The Unionville-Chadds Ford School District offers an extended school year program, referred to as ESY, for students with disabilities served by Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) who need instruction over the summer.  This summer, ESY will run from June 26 through August 8 (six weeks), Monday through Thursday, 8:00am to 12:00pm at Unionville Elementary School.  Students who participate in this program have disabilities that require them to receive instruction in academics like reading, writing, and mathematics, but students also have goals in the areas of social skills, sensory skills, and communication skills.  Additionally, the program is promoting a different theme each week with a corresponding activity day filled with authentic learning opportunities such as field trips, special visitors, and exciting activities.   This summer in order to best support our ESY students’ needs, we are looking for peers of varying school ages to volunteer to participate in ESY for all six of the one-time per week activity days.  Research suggests that both students with disabilities and students without disabilities greatly benefit from these inclusive opportunities.

If your child is interested in participating in this unique program, please complete the google survey using this link or by going to https://goo.gl/forms/oeAnynnvDeKtgqaa2.  Parents or guardians are responsible for transporting student volunteers to and from Unionville Elementary School, where ESY is being held this summer.  While your child may greatly benefit from volunteering and will be supervised by staff at all times, they will not be receiving any kind of direct instruction.  However, student volunteers will receive guidance on how to interact with their peers who have disabilities and should be willing to fully participate in all activities.

We are very excited to run the ESY Student Volunteer program again this summer!  Please know that we have limited spaces, but we hope to continue this volunteer program next summer.

Two UHS Students will Participate in Prestigious Science and Business Programs.

UHS Students picture

Two Unionville High School Juniors will spend this July at two prominent Pennsylvania universities after each was selected as one of approximately sixty other students to participate in prestigious science and business programs.

Katelyn Tsai will spend four weeks with students from around the country and world attending the Pennsylvania School of Global Entrepreneurship hosted by the Iacocca Institute at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, and Michael Iacocca will spend five weeks in Pittsburgh with students from around the Commonwealth, having received a full scholarship to attend the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Science at Carnegie Mellon University.  Both programs are designed to bring together highly motivated and talented high school students for the purpose of providing opportunities for academic and practical enrichment that is not available through the typical high school curriculum.

Tsai will devote her time to learning about entrepreneurial business development and innovation by spending time in the classroom with Institute faculty and guest lecturers, and she will get to learn about the practical application of those classroom concepts by taking part in workshops and case studies with local business leaders and organizations.  The program is designed to provide insights and opportunities to those students who have demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to share and develop that with other students around the country and around the globe.

Iacocca will spend his five weeks attending science classes taught by Carnegie Mellon University faculty and staff, as well as instructors from neighboring universities like University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne, and Robert Morris Universities.    In addition to classroom lectures, participants get to attend a lab of their choice, where they have access to state of the art scientific equipment and the experienced, knowledgeable instructors of the host university.  The students must also complete a comprehensive group project in one of the science disciplines offered during the program.

Tsai, whose top school is Brown University, became interested in entrepreneurship from her volunteering activities. Seeing such disparity between rich and poor, she chose to attend the summer program to learn about what it takes to start as business.  Tsai plans to use the skills she will learn to further her entrepreneurial spirit and intends to start a non-profit company in the near future, one that would help improve the lives of those in her community who are less fortunate.   She is an active student, who along with her rigorous academic courses finds time to be the current news editor and the Editor-in-Chief in waiting for the Indian Post, the UHS school newspaper; one of the captains of the Speech and Debate team; a Co-Founder and Board Member of the UHS Democratic Club; a Student Council Representative; a Co-Founder and Vice President of the UHS Red Cross, and a Teaching Assistant at Math Plus, a local math tutoring program.

Iacocca, who hopes to attend Carnegie Mellon University, is looking forward to the extended visit to the university, as well as experiencing the intensive academic rigor for which the Governor’s School is renowned.  Iacocca has accelerated his science and math courses since Middle School, having completed several independent studies to do so, and is looking forward to the scientific challenges the program offers.  Iacocca is a member of the UHS Academic Team, the Math Team, and the Speech and Debate Team.  He is also a member of the Study of Exceptional Talent, a program run by the Johns Hopkins’ Center for Talented Youth.  In addition to his academic achievements, Iacocca is working on his Eagle Scout Project this summer so that he can earn his Eagle Scout badge with Boy Scout Troop 22.

Patton Student Runs 50th State Marathon To Save the Eyesight of Kids in Need

Toocheck Picture
When he crosses the finish line in Springfield, Vermont on Tuesday, 14-year-old Nikolas Toocheck will be completing a three-year quest to run a marathon in each of the 50 U.S. states – and he’s running for a cause. He is raising money for the Seva Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides critical vision care to people in need around the world.

From the Bearfest Marathon in Alaska and the Kona in Hawaii, through races in the heartland states including Iowa  and Missouri, to the high-altitude Silverton race in Colorado (9,300 feet above sea level), to the Icarus Florida Ultrafest and the Maine Trust Trail Fest: Nikolas has run them all. As a bonus, he even ran in Washington, D.C.’s Marine Corps Marathon last October, the youngest runner to complete that high-profile race.

Nikolas is also the youngest person to have completed marathons on all seven continents – including two marathons in Antarctica.

Through his Running the World for Children: Stateside campaign, Nikolas’ goal is to help children in need receive the gift of sight. Funds raised will support Seva’s pediatric programs to prevent blindness and preserve eyesight. For 39 years Seva has been a leading innovator in the delivery of vital sight-saving eye care services. Seva’s programs have a special effort to reach children. www.seva.org

Nikolas’s father is an eye doctor who has volunteered all over the world, providing eye care to people in need. Nikolas learned about this critical need while growing up.

“I can’t imagine not being able to see,” says Nikolas, “and I really hope that I can help change that for a lot of kids.”

An estimated 500,000 children become blind each year. Most live in developing countries. By providing access to proper eye care, 80% of blindness and low-vision can be prevented or cured.

Seva’s Director of Development, Julie Nestingen, notes, “It is wonderful to see the focus and commitment Nikolas has for making a difference in the world and he sets a beautiful example for other young people to realize that they ‘don't have to be big to make a difference.’ Seva is honored to have his level of commitment from our supporters,  regardless of age. Nikolas is breaking records at many levels.”

The Vermont race will be the third of Mainly Marathon’s seven-day New England Series. Most marathon runners finish their race and go home to collapse, nurse their blisters, and congratulate themselves on a race well run. But not Nikolas: he will have just run Day 2 of this series in New Hampshire the day before, and this will be his sixth marathon in six weeks.

The idea of running to help others is not new to Toocheck. Already the youngest person to complete a marathon on each continent (at age 11), Toocheck started a philanthropic campaign to help children in need called Running the World for Children when he was just 9 years old. To date, he has raised over $42,000 for children in need. The Vermont Mainly Marathon will be the 57th marathon that he has participated in. To help kids receive the gift of sight, please go to www.nikrunstheworld.com and donate today.
